A citation can point to the wrong conclusion
A founder sells evidence reviews of business reports. Clients pay for checked claims, and the founder must choose a workflow within nine reviewer hours each week. A fluent AI explanation with a citation makes automatic approval tempting. But a real citation can accompany an unsupported conclusion.
The record says North
In this hypothetical example, all workloads and timings are assumed. The AI receives a record marked “Region: North” and “Status: accepted,” then approves the report’s claim, “Every region is approved.” Its citation opens the correct record. After review, the claim still outruns the evidence: nothing establishes acceptance elsewhere.
The error is a jump in scope, not a missing document. An explanation can sound coherent while extending a local result into a universal claim. A client could authorize a wider launch than the record supports.
Compare complete workflows
Assume 60 claims per week. Full manual review, including source checks and final wording, takes eight minutes per claim: 60 × 8 = 480 minutes, or eight hours.
With AI assistance, verifying each draft against its cited record takes four minutes: 60 × 4 = 240 minutes. Assume ten drafts need another twelve minutes each to retrace context and correct the text; 10 × 12 = 120 minutes. Total: 360 minutes, or six hours. Both fit. Choose assistance for its three hours of spare capacity, while keeping every source check. Spare capacity alone earns no revenue.
When rework changes the choice
Open each cited record. Compare its region and acceptance status with the exact claim. A regional record offered as proof for “every region” triggers rework: narrow the wording or obtain evidence before delivery. Log checking and correction time.
Now suppose counterclaims reveal that 25 AI drafts need correction. Assistance takes 240 + 25 × 12 = 540 minutes: nine hours. If manual review still takes eight hours, choose it. Under these timings, twenty corrections erase the time advantage; above twenty, use manual review.
